History

Mount Edgecombe was founded in 1849 when Captain William Smeardon was given a plot of land under the Byrne Emigration Scheme (1849 - 1851). He named the area after the Earl of Mount Edgecombe in Cornwall. Smeardon built the first sugar mill in 1859, however, it was not very profitable and production was low.

In 1895, Marshall Campbell purchased the mill. The Sugar Mill witnessed unprecedented growth with the expansion of the company resulting in the establishment of twenty-two sugar estates. The purpose of these estates was to cultivate and provide a constant supply of sugar cane to the Mount Edgecombe Sugar Mill. Natal Estates Limited became one of the largest sugar milling giants in South Africa.

The Mount Edgecombe Sugar Mill saw its final days in 1994, giving way to the developments in the area we see today.
