Cato Ridge at a glance

The town of Cato Ridge is situated about 30 km southeast of Pietermaritzburg and 50 km northwest of Durban. It strategically lies along the Mariannhill Toll Road between Assagay and Camperdown, just a little further west of Inchanga.

Known as Durban's 'Dry Port', Cato Ridge is a growing industrial node. Distribution and logistics companies have set up warehouses here to store their goods before distributing them to other parts of the country.

One of the main reasons that Cato Ridge has become the preferred location for manufacturing, logistics, and distribution companies is because of the great access to the highway between Johannesburg and Durban.

As a result of the massive developments planned for the future, Cato Ridge is becoming an attractive residential area. The splendid countryside life and views of the Valley of 1000 Hills also make it a sought-after location for homebuyers.

History

Cato Ridge was named after George Christopher Cato (1814-1893). He was the first mayor of Durban from 1854 to 1856. Georgedale, which is part of Cato Ridge, was the birthplace of James Mpanza who became known as the 'Father of Soweto'.
